Died- 15 December 1844, Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, India
James South Barwise Esq, Late of Fureedabad was born in 1790 in Kent, England. He belonged to the Barwise family settled at Cumberland. James purchased large amount of land.
1827- He travelled to India and settled here as Indigo Planter and accumulated large amount of wealth in Indigo Factories.
His rise made him an enemy of Maheshnarain Singh ( Zamindar of Jounpore) for possession of large amount of land on the ancestorial land of Maheshnarain. James South Barwise led a successful litigation against Maheshnarain.
James South Barwise served as " Sub Deputy Opium Agent of Jounpore".
He also served as " Secretary of Jounpore Free School".
He also founded a school at Fureedabad in association with Church.
Assassination( 15 December 1844)
At Midnight of 15 Dec 1844, some men's of Maheshnarain entered the mansion of James South Barwise. They posed as dacoits and beheaded James South Barwise. Dacoits then fled the house without looting a single penny. A police inquiry was placed upon Maheshnarain , but he was acquitted due to lack of evidence.
James South Barwise is buried in Church Mission Cemetery, Jounpore. He held high esteem among Indians for his donations made for the welfare purpose. His tomb is worshipped by locals as they claim that James South Barwise grants wishes.

His tomb is worshipped by the locals and they whitewashed it. They offer food, wine during Christmas.
